Recycling practices vary from one school district to the next in Massachusetts. While some Massachusetts schools have sophisticated recycling programs that even include food composting, others have barely gotten started with recycling.
That’s a real shame, especially when you consider that the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection’s GREEN TEAM program provides FREE resources to get started. The GREEN TEAM is an interactive educational program that empowers students and teachers to help the environment through waste reduction, recycling, composting, energy conservation, and pollution prevention. Participating classes receive certificates of recognition and are eligible to win awards.
Through the GREEN TEAM, teachers and administrators can access educational materials and lesson plans that align with the Massachusetts Department of Education Curriculum Frameworks. The program also rewards classes that successfully complete one or more of the suggested activities. Schools are also publicly recognized for their achievements in environmental education.
GREEN TEAM participants receive educational tools, such as a classroom poster, lesson plans, recycling tips, and suggested activities. Each class that takes THE GREEN TEAM PLEDGE receives a Certificate of Recognition and is eligible to win great prizes. Classes that complete more activities advance to the next level and are eligible to win other valuable rewards.
Through the program, schools can also request free recycling bins, composting bins, idling reduction signs, and other materials. These programs can have a positive impact on school budgets, making it a “win-win” for students, the community, and the environment.
Public school teachers and administrators in Massachusetts can visit the GREEN TEAM website to register. For more information, please contact Emily Fabel, Program Administrator, at (413) 586-7350 ext. 290.
